Case study · Antibody discovery, Switzerland

Four people, paper files, and eventually a COVID antibody.

How a four-person lab became a company of around three hundred people, on one system that grew with it.

2013 · The start

A small lab that knew it would not stay small.

In 2013 we started working with a young antibody discovery company. Four people in the lab, and a way of working held together by paper documents and Office files.

They were small, but they had already seen that their processes would not grow with them. So they asked us to look at how they worked.

Step by step · What we built

One system, built around the way they worked.

We began with the steps that mattered most: experiments, projects and tasks, samples. Each one was shaped around how the team actually worked, not around a product.

As the team settled in, we kept adding: instruments and their bookings, purchase orders, shipments in and out, collaborators and CROs, protein sequences. Every piece went in when they were ready for it.

2020 · What it made possible

Seven months, where it usually takes three to four years.

Clear processes and data that were always at hand let the company grow quickly without losing track of anything.

When the pandemic arrived, the team went from antibody discovery to first patient dosed in seven months. The science was theirs. The organisation and the information management underneath it were partly ours.

Today

Around three hundred people, and the same system.

Thirteen years later the company is around three hundred people. The system has grown with it all along, and it is still the backbone of how they work. So is our partnership.

You do not need to be large to start properly. You need a process worth getting right, and a system built around it, one step at a time.
